Judy and Johnny have the perfect 1950s marriage in their perfect 1950s suburban house in England. Life is ordered just right. Or is it? As the edges of their perfect life start to unravel, it turns out that being a domestic goddess isn’t as easy as it looks. It’s a fizzy comedic drama dolled up in a gingham house dress with some hard truths to tell about tradwifery: Home, I’m Darling by Laura Wade.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Judy (f, late 30s) has been in love with her image of the 1950s since she was a girl. When she got the chance to quit her soul-killing job in finance to be a 1950s-style housewife and make her dream real, she took it. There’s nothing ironic about Judy – she is whip-smart, she recognizes that housework is real work, and she loves it.
Johnny (m, late 30s) is a realtor who met his wife, Judy, at a meetup for classic car enthusiasts, and they quickly bonded over their shared nostalgia for the ’50s. He thought he could also buy into traditional gender roles – maybe at least for fun? But as their shared fantasy bumps up against reality, he’s not so sure.
Fran (f, mid- to late 30s), a successful commercial stylist, shares Judy’s love for 1950s fashion, music, and dance. Not quite happy with her own life and marriage, Fran wonders if Judy’s way of life could be the answer for her, too.
Marcus (m, late 30s - early 40s), Fran’s husband, is a partner at a firm – and an enigma. Good guy? Bad guy? He’s the kind of person who creates good, progressive rules for the workplace – but thinks they don’t apply to him.
Sylvia (f, late 60s - 70s) lived through the actual 1950s and is having none of this.
Alex (f, late 20s - early 30s) is Johnny’s new boss at the real-estate agency. She’s out for success, but she’s not too cold to take a risk to help someone out when they’re suffering.
Note on accents: all characters will speak in a standard “received pronunciation” English dialect. (Think of a classic BBC news announcer, or a Jane Austen heroine.) If you have that accent in your repertory, be prepared to show it off! If you don’t, that’s not a dealbreaker - we’ll work on accents during the rehearsal run. But all auditioners will be asked to try an English accent just so we can see where we’re starting from.
